Where to Eat in the Alpujarra - Typical Dishes and Best Restaurants

Enjoy a special day at the Alhambra with a guided tour

In these villages there are at least 2-3 interesting restaurants for people who wish to try traditional food or something new.

In the Alpujarra, delicious stews, tasty pots, and rich casseroles are famous. They're made with care and homegrown ingredients.
Before describing the best restaurants in the Alpujarra below, let's first delve into Alpujarra's gastronomy and its typical dishes.
Traditional Dishes from the Alpujarra
Amongst the recommended dishes of the local cuisine: from Lanjarón, are the fennel stew and the garlic soup with ham; from Busquistar, the rabbit stew; the chestnut stew from Capileira, and the gypsy potato pot or the stew with pumpkin from Trevélez.
Plato Alpujarreño (potatoes, ham, chorizo, morcilla, serrano ham and fried egg.) has become very popular, to the extent that it is often enjoyed even outside the region. 'Morcilla', maybe it's better not to know what it's made of... try it first and, than, check the ingridients.

Meat Products and Ham from Trevélez
Meat products derived from pork are the most classic and widespread in the Alpujarra.Although traditional family slaughters are becoming less common, people still enjoy tasting good chorizo (smoked and cured sausage), morcilla (blood sausages), and various other sausages made in the traditional way.

The dry and cold climate of these towns, especially Trevélez, the highest among them, makes it a perfect natural drying room for ham.
Desserts and Fruits
It is in the sweets and desserts where the Arab legacy of these towns is most noticeable. We recommend that you enjoy the Soplillos, Fig Bread, Fritters, and Ala-Jú Cakes, among others.
Cherry tomatoes are dried on the terraces and in the lower Alpujarra there are subtropical crops, such as avocados from Órgiva.
Honey from the Alpujarra
The enormous biodiversity in Sierra Nevada means that these towns produce very good honey made with the nectar of thousands of flowers from chestnut trees, elms, rosemary, thyme, orange blossom, lavender, among others.
Wine from the Alpujarra
The Alpujarra has a long tradition in wine production. Its vineyards are the highest in Europe, with some located at more than 1,300 meters of altitude. The richness of the soil and the absence of rain mean that the vines roots dig deep into the soil.
In a few years these wines will receive the Denomination of Origin of Granada.
Some wineries in the Alpujarra open their doors to the public and organize tourist activities during the harvest and throughout the rest of the year.

Two family vineyards that have been passed down from generation to generation: García de Verdevique in Castaras (try their exquisite Costa wine) and Bodegas el Sotillo (with traditional methods and limited production) in Albuñol.

Opinions about Gastronomy of the Alpujarra
Traditional dishes, homemade food

We tried typical food in Capileira: the baked steak and the Alpujarra’s dish. The restaurants of the Alpujarra offer traditional gastronomy, a homemade food and family treatment. Most of the dishes are made from meat, so Alpujarra is an ideal place for us. I think it would be difficult for a vegetarian to find something other than the Spanish omelet.
