You might need to park on the outskirts of town, as parking space is limited and crowds are common during high season, and weekends.
How long does it take to see Soportújar?
Two hours are sufficient to see the town, visit all the sites on the haunted route, take photos, and buy a souvenir. Additionally, you need to account for the time it takes to travel to and from Soportújar to Granada (approximately 1 hour).You will need more time if you also want to do a hiking route and explore the surroundings of Soportújar (2-3 hours), visit the O'Sel Ling Buddhist center (3 hours, only by car), or go cycling. It all depends on what you want to do in Soportújar.
The Haunting Route

Weaver Spider (Araña Tejedora de Sueños)
A huge black metal spider climbing on a wall has been placed between Camas and Moralillo streets in the year 2020.This magical dream-weaving creature was created made by the March Hare scenography company.
Witch's Eye Cave (Cueva del Ojo de la Bruja)

There are many legends in the area that speak of strange events that occurred at this meeting point in ancient times.
Inside lives a witch who brews potions and casts spells.
The Lions Fountain (Fuente de Los Leones)

It provides a resting spot for visitors, as from this place, you can enjoy beautiful views, and the water is drinkable.
It was built in 1960 and renovated in 2013.
It is located at the entrance of the town on Carretera street.
Baba Yaga Witch (Bruja Baba Yagá)

It is the giant head of the famous witch Baba Yaga, a mythical being in Slavic folklore. This evil witch is said to have steel teeth, one normal leg, and one bone leg.
She loves to eat people, especially children, and it's said that she ages a year every time you ask her a question.
Starry Witch (Bruja Estrellada)

We can only see her legs and part of her broom.
Located at the village entrance above Romero Tavern, it's easy to miss, so be sure to look above.
Magic Cauldrons (Calderos Mágicos)

The cauldron is a utensil always associated with witches, an ancient kitchen utensil in which they brewed their potions.
It seems that in Soportújar a few have been forgotten.
Threshing Circle of Aquelarres (Era de los Aquelarres)

Here it is said that witches met to celebrate their rites.
You will find the Witch House, a recreation of the home of one of those witches who, in distant times, prepared potions, spells, and enchantments in these surroundings.
The views from here, as well as from the nearby Era of Crosses, are wonderful.

Chorro Fountain (Fuente del Chorro)
This old fountain was restored and customized in 2020 to give it a magical appearance, as it is located next to the Baba Yaga's house.In it, the sculptor José Vera Ruiz has left us one of the riddles of the famous witch.
The water is not drinkable.
Baba Yaga’s Hut (Casa de Baba Yagá)

This fantastic wooden house sits on two chicken legs so that the witch Baba Yagá can move from one side to the other.
When the witch returns home, she has to say a magic spell: "Little House, turn your back on the forest and turn towards me", and the house turns and opens its doors for her.

Magic Broom (Escoba Mágica)
Placed on Real Street in 2020 by the stage design company La Liebre de Marzo.This large magic broom, complete with a black cat, is a popular spot for taking photos.
You may not fly away, but your Instagram image will certainly travel far.

Wishing Well (Pozo de los Deseos)
This beautiful well located in the Placeta on Baja Street, very close to Zanjilla Street (supposedly the narrowest street in Spain), is a place of pilgrimage for many people who believe that by flipping a coin and making a wish they will be lucky enough to see it come true one day.It is from 2020, another work from the company La Liebre de Marzo.

Dragon Fountain (Fuente del Dragón)
Work of the sculptor José Vera Ruiz from the year 2017.The water from this fountain flows out through the dragon's whistle.
They say it has aphrodisiac properties and improves fertility, so every day there is someone here queuing to drink it or take a bottle home.

Enchanted Serpent (Serpiente Encantada)
This giant and evil snake surprises us in one of the tinaos of Soportújar.Made by the company La Liebre de Marzo for the Third Halloween. It is made of fiberglass.
Another good spot to capture a viral photo!

Hansel and Gretel's House (Casa de Hansel y Gretel)
Taking advantage of the old water tank on Alta de Soportújar Street, this magical house was created in 2021 by the sculptor José Vera Ruiz.It is planned to complete its interior with all possible details in the future.
Witches' Fountain (Fuente de las Brujas)

The 2014 sculpture depicts two witches, one younger who is learning from the other.
The sculpture is made in such a way that it can be moved if necessary, which is a very interesting quality.
The water is drinkable, and some of it is sprayed in an attempt to imitate the smoke from the magic cauldron.
The famous Haunting Fair takes place here every year. Lights up at night.

Beyond Enchantment and Mystery

Sierra Nevada National Park
Its entire territory is within the National Park and the Natural Park of Sierra Nevada.Its altitude varies between 900 meters in the lowest neighborhood to 3000 meters at the highest peak of its mountain range, which is the Tajo de los Machos.

Tinaos of Soportújar

In fact, it is very likely that the name of the town, Soportujar, has its origin precisely in this element, and it comes from "arcade", place of arcades.

Its Streets and the Church of Soportújar
Its steep and narrow streets are well-maintained and decorated with flower pots.It is advisable to walk through its streets and contemplate its traditional architecture, visit its most emblematic places, take excursions to discover the beauty of its surroundings, and, of course, enjoy its magical festivals.

The sole church of Soportújar, called St. María la Mayor, dates back to the 16th century and was built on the remains of a mosque.
It has a beautiful altarpiece from the 18th century.

Puente Palo Recreation Area
Among them is the Puente Palo recreational area at 1750 meters of altitude. Here you will find an oak grove so old that it is a relic of the Quaternary Period.You won't see many more oaks in the Alpujarra, as the climate has changed and is no longer as cold as before.

Hiking in Soportújar
Soportújar, like other towns in the Alpujarra, is an ideal area for hiking.Many of the most beautiful roads in the province of Granada pass through here.

Some of its most beautiful stages start from Soportújar, they depart from here to the villages of the Poqueira Ravine, ultimately reaching Trevélez.
O'Sel Ling Buddhist Center

It is a steep 8 kilometers, but it will be worth it to discover this spiritual retreat that has been here for more than 30 years and the Dalai Lama himself visited.

In 1572 these families were expelled by Philip II due to the defeat of Aben Humeya, Muslim king whom they supported in the so-called "War of the Alpujarras".
Christian families were then brought from Castile and other parts of Andalusia to repopulate the territory and they were granted community ownership of the land.

However, today Soportújar only has 268 inhabitants. Between 1950 and 1970 it lost the two thirds of its population.
The aftermath of the Civil War, marked by poverty and widespread destruction, led to significant emigration to the large cities and the exile of many of its inhabitants.

Saint Anton Festival

Bonfires, known as the "chisco de San Antón," are lit in the town center, where people gather to enjoy food. The festivities continue until it is time for the Sermon and the Burial of the Fox, an ancient tradition marking the conclusion of the celebrations.
Haunted May Festival
The Bewitched Maio has only had two editions in Soportújar.
A Holi Run or Battle of Colors is also organized, during which participants throw powders of all colors at each other.
Attendees are invited to enjoy a popular paella, and the night concludes with music and dancing.
Bewitchment Fair

It is a unique event in Andalusia during which the village triples its population.
For a week, magical rituals are recreated, and fun activities such as workshops, theater performances, queimadas, costume parties, and concerts are held.
This year 2025 the Soportújar Haunting Fair is celebrated from August 7 to 10. The Night of the Witches with its famous witches' parade and the popular queimada will take place on Thursday starting at 9:30 p.m.

Saint Roch Festival
On Saturday and Sunday the festivities of San Roque, the patron saint of Soportújar, are celebrated.They are the major holidays that bring together families who live apart for the rest of the year.
On Saturday afternoon, the traditional procession of the saint takes place, followed by concerts featuring pasodobles and other piano performances. In the evening, there is a popular festival.

There will also be sports and domino competitions. On Sunday night, a concert featuring popular songs from Soportújar and a karaoke night to bid farewell to the festivities.
Halloween
On November 31, the darkest night of the year is celebrated here in a special way, although it occurs a few days later.
Noche de Brujas (Witches Night)
At the beginning of November, Witches Night is celebrated in Soportújar.That night, the witches and warlocks take over the town. The Witches' Parade, featuring storytellers, enigmas, and theatrical performances, runs through the streets.

Holy Week
In Soportújar, as in the rest of Andalusia, processions are held during Holy Week.Something very peculiar about these towns is what takes place on the eve of Resurrection Sunday: the young people of the town participate in the Burning of Judas, which involves burning a straw doll.
Where to Eat in Soportújar, Restaurants and Bars
The gastronomy in Soportújar is very similar to that of the rest of the Alpujarra.
During Holy Week, they prepare the typical "hornazos," which are also eaten in other towns of the province. The hornazo is a round oil bread bun with a boiled egg in the center.

Being such a small town there are only 6 places to eat in Soportújar and it is advisable to reserve in advance, as they fill up easily.
All the restaurants and bars in Soportújar offer typical food from the area: They are not restaurants with signature food, but in most of them, you can enjoy good food.

1. Romero Tavern
It has a cozy terrace on a pedestrian street. In the summer, it is better to sit inside the premises with air conditioning.Here they serve "witch food," such as the famous witch's chocolate, "kick where it hurts," and "one-eyed bat wings" (which are chicken wings), etc.

There is a variety of beers available, and the portions are generous. Reasonable prices: Alpujareño dish 11.50 euros, pork tenderloin 12.50 euros, etc.

2. El Correillo Terrace Bar
A hidden place nestled among the steep streets, situated the Chicken Legs house and the Witch's Broom.There is a witch at the door, where people usually take photos. Inside, there is a cozy dining room adorned with witch decorations, as well as a small terrace.

Combined loin or chicken costs 8.50 euros, sirloin with pepper is priced at 15 euros, and baked cheesecake is available for 5.50 euros.

3. The Witch's Barrels

What distinguishes this place is its terrace, offering beautiful views of the mountains.
Although lacking a kitchen, they offer tapas portions that are both delicious and reasonably priced. Sausages 8 euros, salmorejo 5 euros, etc.

How to Get to Soportújar

Where is the witches' village located?
Soportújar is situated in Alpujarra, approximately one hour from Granada and a little less than the Tropical Coast.The distance between Granada and Soportújar is approximately 60 km.
It is located in the heart of Sierra Nevada National Park at 927m above sea level.
How to Get to Soportújar by Car

Don't forget to greet the donkey on the road!
1.8 km after passing the Carataunas detour, when you see the Soportújar sign, turn left towards Calle Carretera.
After the detour, you'll arrive at the town of the witches in just 1 minute, although it's advisable to park before reaching the town as finding parking in the village can be complicated.

How to Get to Soportújar by Bus
Soportújar can be reached by bus from Granada, but there are only two available. The first bus departs from Granada in the morning at 10:00, and the second in the afternoon at 4:30 p.m.From Soportújar to Granada, there is a bus at 07:35 in the morning and another at 17:10 in the afternoon.

Note: schedules may change, please check on the Alsa website (intercity buses). On the same site, you can also purchase tickets.
The bus trip from Granada to Soportújar takes almost 2 hours and includes8 stops. The return trip lasts only 1.5 hours because it has fewer stops.
Where to Park in Soportújar

There are only two small parking lots in the village.

But there are two new parking lots outside the village, just before the entrance to the town, located about 500 meters from the main attractions.
The price for parking in all lots is 5 euros per day for a car.

When everything is full, usually during festivals, people park on the main road of Alpujarra, A-4132, before the detour.
If you park there, you will have to walk 1 km until you reach the town. Along the way, there are several viewpoints with scenic views.

On Casas Rurales en Soportújar, you can find information about rural houses available for rent in Soportújar.
If tranquility is what you're seeking, it's better to stay in a nearby vilages with fewer people.
